If you want the federal government to stop going after our people, our candidates, our businesses, our schools, our way of life - you have to defund them. You have to cut them off from the money train, and that's our taxpayer dollars.
As his harassment and ridiculous charges continue by the U.S. federal government, Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS SHOULD DEFUND THE DOJ AND FBI UNTIL THEY COME TO THEIR SENSES."
Of course the establishment media is having a field day mocking this, but...
Could it be done?
After the Left's reckless "defund the police" cry the last few years, why is it unreasonable to seek to defund federal agencies that now seek not justice, but wage war on a possible GOP challenger to the current Democratic president? If the Left and Democrats think it's fair to use the FBI and DOJ against Trump, why shouldn't congressional Republicans use the power they have to take down or diminish these agencies?
The Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse. Members of Congress vote to fund parts of the federal government.
But they don't have to.
From Reuters today:
President Joe Biden, a Democrat, has asked Congress in his budget request for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1 for about $50 billion in funding for the Justice Department, an increase over current levels. Trump faces two Justice Department criminal investigations led by a special counsel appointed by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland. One focuses on efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election that he lost to Biden. The other focuses on classified documents that Trump retained after leaving office.
A major part of congressional Republicans' duty is voting to fund the government. While the Left might mock Trump's request, Republican members would do better to think beyond those criticisms.
Donald Trump actually has a valid point: Why would the GOP use our tax dollars to fund arms of the government hellbent on destroying their party? Why should a single Republican vote to use our tax dollars to fund federal agencies that are participating in an obvious witch hunt on arguably the most prominent member of their party?
This isn't about good governance. It's partisan revenge.
The Founding Fathers gave the duty of federal spending to elected members Congress for a reason. There's nothing wrong or unreasonable about Republicans thinking extra hard about when - and when not - to use it.
If you're asking yourself "What do we do," then support Trump's call for defund. It is what our Founding Fathers designed our system to do. Don't like abuse and overreach by one branch? Then tell your rep to stop funding it.
