Republican Senator Katie Britt: Laken Riley Act 'Will Save Lives'

The Laken Riley Act is named for a 22-year-old Georgia college student who was murdered earlier this year by an illegal alien with a criminal record.

Under this act, law enforcement can detain any illegal immigrant with a theft-related record, something some lawmakers believe would have prevented a tragedy like Ms. Riley's. It would also allow states harmed by illegal immigration to sue the federal government.

Early last week, the act passed the House. Late last week, it passed a procedural vote in the Senate.

But the Laken Riley Act needs to pass legitimately and in whole, something Republican Senator Katie Britt stressed during an interview on Sunday.

She says it "will save lives."

"It is a commonsense piece of legislation," Sen. Britt told  CNN's State of the Union.

"There's been no more litigated issue over the last four years than President Biden and Vice President Harris' open-border policies," Britt said.

"It is my belief that the American people entered a verdict on that on Nov. 5, saying we are ready for secure borders," Britt insisted. "We want our streets and our communities to be safe and secure."

"This is the first step in doing this," she added.

As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Britt recently reintroduced the Senate version of the Laken Riley Act and had this to say after its procedural vote passage on Thursday.

“Today’s vote on the Laken Riley Act is an important step forward in making our country safer, but there’s still more work to be done to get this commonsense legislation across the finish line,” said Britt.

She continued, “Laken’s horrific murder should never have happened. While we cannot bring Laken back, Congress can and must pass the Laken Riley Act to save American lives and prevent this tragedy from repeating itself. Congress has an obligation to Laken, her family, and to Americans in every corner of our country to get this bill passed and signed into law.”

There has been push back from Democrats - which makes no sense whatsoever - and Senate Democratic Leader has not promised a final vote on the legislation.

Which is part of the reason Sen. Britt has been out front in promoting the act and raising awareness.

The Laken Riley Act needs to pass. There is absolutely no logical reason for it not to pass.

This is something her family wants. This is something she deserves after such a preventable tragedy.

It's something we need in order to prevent future tragedies.

There is not s single good excuse for Congress not to vote for the Laken Riley Act.
