Remember when Democrats were all charged up over the many legal cases directed at Donald Trump and wallowed in being able to call him a "felon."
Team Trump insisted that it was all political - fabricated and inflated charges designed to hurt the Democrats' number one enemy, politically.
Despite it all, Trump won the 2024 election and is now President-elect.
So now, Special Counsel Jack Smith is moving to drop his cases against Trump over the 2020 election and classified documents.
How convenient.
On Monday, Smith filed to drop his case over the 2020 election, which includes four felony charges against Trump.
Smith filed a motion to dismiss by arguing as the next president, Trump can't be prosecuted due to the Constitution and a longstanding Department of Justice rule against it.
According to CNN, Smith wrote in the filing, “The Department’s position is that the Constitution requires that this case be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated. This outcome is not based on the merits or strength of the case against the defendant.”
Smith continued, “That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind."
"Based on the Department’s interpretation of the Constitution, the Government moves for dismissal without prejudice of the superseding indictment," he wrote.
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung called Smith’s filing a “major victory for the rule of law” and said the “weaponization of the justice system must end" in a statement.
Cheung said, “The American People re-elected President Trump with an overwhelming mandate to Make America Great Again. Today’s decision by the DOJ ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump, and is a major victory for the rule of law. The American People and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country.”
This was lawfare perpetrated by the Biden administration against Donald Trump. The weaponization of the legal system by the government against a political opponent.
This is third world, tinpot dictator, banana republic stuff, typical of an authoritarian dictator.
And Democrats had become entirely comfortable with it.
Thank God they lost.
