During his trip to Italy and Vatican City, Vice President JD Vance was able to meet with Pope Francis on Easter Sunday, one day before his death was announced on Monday.
Vance, who is Catholic, said he was "grateful" for the meeting and prayed for Francis' good health at the time.
Vance told Francis, “It’s good to see you in better health” and that “I pray for you every day.”
The Holy Father gave Vance a Vatican tie, blessed rosaries and Easter eggs for the vice president's children.
On Sunday, Vance had many good things to say about his trip during Holy Week.
After the announcement of Francis' death, Vance paid his respects.
"I just learned of the passing of Pope Francis," Vance shared on X. "My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him."
"I was happy to see him yesterday, though he was obviously very ill," he continued. "But I’ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful."
"May God rest his soul," Vance added.
Vance was not shy about expressing his pleasure over his trip.
The vice president's office also touted the meeting.
"Today, during Holy Week, Vice President JD Vance met with Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin,” a Saturday press release read. “The Vice President and Cardinal Parolin discussed their shared religious faith, Catholicism in the United States, the plight of persecuted Christian communities around the world, and President Trump’s commitment to restoring world peace.”
Amidst this, President Donald Trump offered an Easter message from the White House.
Vice President JD Vance was indeed grateful to meet with Pope Francis in his last hours on the holiest of days. Rest in peace, Pope Francis.
