It's been three weeks since Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race and Democrats installed Kamala Harris as their nominee.
Biden did not have a primary. Harris did not have a primary. No votes were cast for either to be the presidential nominees of their party.
The 'Democratic' Party.
In a democracy, in addition to voting, major political candidates also give interviews. They hold press conferences. They lay out their ideas - and have those ideas challenged by the public - so that voters can make informed decisions.
But Kamala Harris hasn't given a single interview since she was anointed as the nominee. She hasn't done one press conference.
She hasn't been in a single situation in which she has had to answer questions.
This is bad for democracy. So bad, that even CNN is now calling her out.
That's right - CNN
CNN's Jim Acosta spoke with Harris-Walz campaign communications director Michael Tyler on Wednesday about why Harris - the current vice president of the United States - won't hold a press conference.
“Would it kill you guys to have a press conference?” Acosta asked. “Why hasn’t she had a press conference?”
Tyler replied, “Listen, the vice president and Governor Walz have been busy criss-crossing this country since the launch of this campaign and adding Governor Walz to the ticket. You saw the ways in which they went across the battleground states last week, generating rallies of thousands, 10,000 here, 15,000 there.”
That's not an answer.
Acosta rightly said that a rally is not the same as press conference - where Harris can be asked questions.
Tyler eventually said that Harris will commit to a sit-down interview by the end of the month.
Seriously? That's it?
Which is exactly how Acosta reacted. “I don’t want to belabor this, but one interview before the end of the month, I mean, that’s not a lot,” Acosta said. “I mean, can you commit to a press conference before the end of the month?”
Tyler responded, “We will commit to directly engage with the voters that are actually going to decide this election. And that is going to be complete with rallies, with sit-down interviews, with press conferences, with all the digital assets we have at our disposal."
Okay. When is that going to happen? There's less than three months left in this election.
Tyler went on, "We are running a campaign that is built to communicate with the voters that are actually going to decide the pathway to 270 electoral votes. We are confident in the plan that we have in place and we’re going to execute that plan.”
In other words... not even a Kamala Harris surrogate was going to commit to his boss giving an interview or a press conference.
The Harris campaign strategy is to hide her as much as possible from any sort of scrutiny.
So far, they've done precisely that. The less voters see the vice president, or know about Kamala Harris and what she might stand for, the better for her.
