DC's Democrat Mayor Bowser Praises 'Forward-Looking' Meeting with Trump

MSNBC/X/Screenshot

Everyone from Mark Zuckerberg to Joe Scarborough have headed down to Mar-a-Lago to play nice with President-elect Donald Trump. Now, you can add Washington DC's Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser to the list.

Last Saturday on MSNBC's The Weekend, Mayor Bowser told host Michael Steele that she had a “candid” meeting with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort and felt as though it was "forward-looking.”

Bowser said she is "optimistic" about working with Trump.

Steele asked Bowser, "How did those conversations go, and what should city residents expect from this administration, particularly given some of the words used by the former president soon to be new president, about this city, referring to it as a killing field, rejecting a lot of the efforts to protect citizens during the Black Lives Matter movement, etc. How did you do that dance?"

It was a loaded question - this is MSNBC we're talking about - but Bowser's reply was balanced and even positive.

Bowser replied, "Well, let me just say this. You are right that the city of Washington, D.C., the capital city, has a different relationship with the president of the United States than any other city in America."

"We’re proud that we’re the nation’s capital," she continued. "We are host to the federal government. We’re the host of grand events that show people what the United States of America is."

Bowser then talked about "the privilege" of getting to work with the president as DC's mayor.

"And I have had the privilege now to work — This will be my third transition with the president and the second with Donald Trump," she said.

The mayor noted that she met with Trump before his first term at Trump Tower.

"And so just like in 2017-2016, where I traveled to Trump Tower at the time where he was handling his transition, this time I spoke with him at Mar a Lago, where he’s handling his transition," Bowser continued.

Bowser was spelling out that she simply needed to meet where and when the transitioning was happening. This time the two met right before the new year, on December 30th.

She seemed confident about working together where they can.

Bowser explained, "And I would characterize it as a forward-looking meeting, where we talked about the things that are important for the district and for him in his second term."

"I think it was candid," she finished. "I think it was level setting and we are looking forward to working on those shared priorities."

Say what you will, but this is how adults, and particularly people in public life, are supposed to approach each other.

Donald Trump has been known to go on the attack, but so often it's in response to someone already attacking him.

Bowser met with Trump in her role as mayor of the nation's capitol recognizing and respecting his role as President-elect.

And it went well.

This is how things are SUPPOSED to work. Not just politicians and pundits waking up every day to call Donald Trump "Hitler" or something else crazy and absurd.

More of this, please.
