Bozell: Rescission Package is Fiscally Responsible, but Will Do Little to Excite the Base

(RESTON, VA) May 8, 2018 — ForAmerica Chairman L. Brent Bozell released the following statement on the White House’s plan to request a rescission package from Congress in an effort to return $15 billion in unused federal spending to taxpayers:

“The requested rescission package, while fiscally responsible policy, will do little to excite the conservative base who is still reeling from the $1.3 trillion omnibus signed in March.

“Coincidentally, Speaker-hopeful Rep. Kevin McCarthy reportedly is steering this rescission ship. If he wants to be Speaker of the House, this is an interesting test of his leadership capabilities. If McCarthy can’t get a bill to slash a meager $15 billion through a Republican-controlled Congress and get it onto the President’s desk, then he shouldn’t be considered for Speaker of the House.

“Whether or not a rescission bill gets passed, taking a few scraps off the books does not qualify Republicans as good stewards of taxpayer money.  The Republican majority in Congress just passed the single most bloated, irresponsible omnibus in history. Federal spending last year was almost four trillion dollars, and Republicans still immorally fund Planned Parenthood, so they can continue to slaughter unborn babies.

“Rescission packages are better than nothing, but wasteful and immoral spending must be eliminated in the next spending bill.”
