CROSS SECTION OF TRADITIONALISTS, LIBERTARIANS, ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND NATIONAL DEFENSE CONSERVATIVES RIP OBAMA “ACCOMMODATION”
L. Brent Bozell III, Chairman, For America
The Obama administration's mandate that Catholics provide contraceptive, sterilization and abortifacient services is the greatest assault on religious freedom in the history of the Republic. Never before has this nation ever witnessed the federal government so ruthless in its over-reach of power, and so dismissive of the Constitution. This is an issue that affects every Catholic and non-Catholic, should it be another Christian, a Jew, even a non-believer. To allow this "rule," as this administration so arrogantly calls it, to stand is to surrender our most basic freedom, the freedom of conscience. We cannot.
Obama demanded that Catholic organizations provide birth control and other abortion-related services. That's unconstitutional. He cannot do it. There is an appropriate uproar. The regime says, "Okay, we'll walk it back and then we'll make the insurance companies do it." He's still getting everything he wants! He's getting mandated federal funding of abortion services -- and, in the process, trampling all over the Constitution. The right to religious liberty in this context is unequivocal in our country. It's in the Constitution! Since when does a a president have the power to threaten to issue a rule gutting religious liberty and then claim the power to make compromises on that issue? That is how, folks, we lose our liberty. This is how we lose the Constitution.
Edwin Meese III, Former Attorney General of the United States
The recent attack on religious liberty by the Obama administration is typical of, and follows, numerous other assaults on the Constitution. The Founders' concept of checks and balances (such as separation of powers, federalism, Senate confirmation of executive appointees, etc.), designed to protect the liberty and political rights of the people, have been either ignored or deliberately violated.
This is an example of one of the greatest attempts at the shredding of the Constitution in our history. Other presidents have complained about being frustrated by the Constitution in their compulsive desire to wield more power, but in the end they at least complied--for the most part-- with the mandates of that document. This president goes ahead either by defiance or subterfuge (i.e., the hoax about addressing the current religious liberty concerns about life and morality) to placate his extreme leftist political base.
The members of Congress have a duty, and all citizens and patriotic groups have an obligation, to do everything in their power to stop this assault on the Constitution. Unless we do so, we will have allowed the destruction of the basic tenet of our democratic republic: a government that acts only with the consent of the governed.
Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), Chairman Republican Study Committee
This ObamaCare rule still tramples on Americans’ First Amendment right to freedom of religion. It’s a fig leaf, not a compromise. Whether they are affiliated with a church or not, employers will still be forced to pay an insurance company for coverage that includes abortion-inducing drugs.
This is not just a problem for church-affiliated hospitals and charities. Under these rules, a small business owner with religious objections to abortion-inducing drugs and contraception must either violate his religious beliefs or violate the law.
The liberal Obama administration thinks its political goals trump the religious faith of American citizens. That isn’t right, fair, or constitutional.
Bill Bennett, Former Reagan Administration Education Secretary, Nationally Syndicated Radio Talk Show Host
Religious liberty and freedom of conscience are at the mercy of government run health care and the power of big feminism. ObamaCare must be repealed and this ruling overturned.
Mark R. Levin, New York Times Bestselling Author, Nationally Syndicated Radio Talk Show Host
It is neither noble nor virtuous to dismiss or downplay the peril our country faces. Barack Obama is an imperial president exercising unconstitutional power. The nation is in the midst of a constitutional crisis. Now is the time for all freedom-loving Americans to be heard.
All people of good conscience should resist the President's assault on religious freedom. This is one of many in a long line of assaults on the Constitution. It is indeed blatant, and is an attack on religious liberty, which is fundamental to the American ideal. I hope and pray that the resistance to this attack on the Constitution and the sovereignty of the citizen will awaken a broader understanding that the very foundations of the country are being undermined by this Administration, and many who have come before.
Jenny Beth Martin, Tea Party Patriots, Co-Founder & National Coordinator
The Obama administration's mandate that Catholics and other faith-based institutions provide contraceptive, sterilization and abortifacient services under ObamaCare is perhaps the boldest assault on the U.S. Constitution by any President in history. However, it should not come as a surprise to anyone that has followed the development of ObamaCare from its inception.
When the President made the unconstitutional claim that the federal government has the authority and power to regulate economic inactivity, thus making ObamaCare possible, we should have seen this coming. The most terrifying element of this rule is that it is just the beginning of the government’s rule-making process and other violations of constitutional rights are certain to follow.
Tea Party Patriots is proud to have been an early and ardent opposition to ObamaCare. It is without question the one policy that unites our membership more than any other. While our membership has consistently called for reasonable reforms to the nation’s healthcare policies, we have consistently opposed ObamaCare and every element that interferes with the doctor-patient relationship and forces individuals to relinquish their constitutional rights of faith and conscience.
Tea Party Patriots believes that this rule is unconstitutional and, we call for the administration to immediately repeal it. We also believe that this rule is evidence for the Supreme Court to consider when ruling on ObamaCare this spring and summer. The unconstitutional foundation of ObamaCare is only the beginning of our nightmare, and it must be found unconstitutional in its entirety.
Tea Party Patriots is proud to stand solidly in opposition to the Obama administration on this reckless and treasonous violation of individual human and constitutional rights.
Michael P. Warsaw, President, EWTN Global Catholic Network
EWTN is an organization that takes our Catholic identity very seriously. It is core to our mission and core to our values as an employer. Friday's announcement by the President that his administration had made accommodations for religious groups in its HHS contraceptive mandate has changed nothing for EWTN, many other religious employers, or for the countless individual business owners and people of faith who share our outrage at being forced to pay for services which we find immoral. The administration's attempt at a so-called compromise is too little and too late. As a Catholic organization, we find these "accommodations" unacceptable. We cannot and will not compromise our beliefs or our organization's mission.
On Thursday, February 9, 2012, before the President's announcement, EWTN filed a lawsuit asking the federal courts to intervene and to declare the HHS contraceptive mandate unconstitutional. We intend to continue to press forward with that cause of action.
Ken Blackwell, former U.S. Ambassador, UN Human Rights Commission
Religious liberty is the most important of our human rights. Without religious freedom, people exist only as political or economic entities, not as free human beings. Religious liberty is the first of all human rights, for it implies the dignity and sarcredness of human conscience. One's faith is one's most profound level of personhood. We must fight with all we have to defeat this attack on the foundation of American Exceptionalism.
Frank J. Gaffney, Jr., President, Center for Security Policy
Barack Obama's serial breaches of his oath of office — to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States — need to be resisted with at least as much determination and tenacity as he brings to his wrecking operation. Every American has a stake in this fight. If the liberties you hold most dear have not been savaged yet, just wait. They will inevitably — unless, that is, the Congress rejects the President's anti-constitutional misconduct and the voters hold him accountable for it next November.
Gary Bauer, American Values
President Obama has expressed frustration that the system of government given to us by our Founders prevents him from moving as fast as he would like. He is a man in a hurry - in a hurry to remake America by tearing our Nation away from its central idea that our liberty comes from God. This dispute has little to do with access to contraception. This is a confrontation over whether Obama's army of regulators can use Obamacare to essentially repeal the First Amendment's guarantee to the "free exercise of religion." All who believe in liberty must stand together to insure that he will not prevail.
Ed Gillespie, former WH counselor to President Bush
What’s clear from this fight is that Obamacare is everything conservatives feared it would be, and worse. It is a recipe for imposing on people not only costs, but beliefs. Its tentacles are now shown to extend pretty much everywhere, and the Administration response is revealing. When the hidden costs become apparent, the answer is not to back down but to lash out. This is why the Department of Health and Human Services is sitting on countless more regulations that should be promulgated to meet the Affordable Care Act’s deadlines. But they’ve learned from the contraception mandate that fully implementing this awful bill means waiting until after November 2012 to reveal what’s waiting.
T. Kenneth Cribb Jr., former chief of Domestic Affairs for President Ronald Reagan
Barack Obama's frontal assault on the First Amendment protection of religious liberty is the latest proof that our fundamental constitutional freedoms are in peril so long as he remains in office. Friday's meaningless move to shift the restrictions on freedom of conscience from insured to insurer has an unintended consequence: it reminds citizen's of all faiths and beliefs that Obama thinks that he can withdraw or extend freedom with the stroke of his pen, representative democracy to the contrary notwithstanding. Americans once fought a revolution on this very ground.
Tony Perkins, President, Family Research Council
How will the insurance company pay for this? The President suggests giving away these drugs and services is good for the bottom line because the insurance company saves money in the long run by reducing the number of pregnancies.
Really. If this is good for business and saves money, why didn't the insurance companies do this years ago? Nothing has prohibited insurance companies from providing contraceptives. Insurance companies are not charities. They will be off setting the costs by increasing the administrative costs of organizations plans.
So, goes the old saying, there is no such thing as a free lunch. So there is no such thing as a clear conscience when you violate the tenants of your faith, whether it is in writing or not.
The White House already has tried to defuse the controversy by shifting the coverage mandate from insurance buyers to the insurance companies, but everyone with an IQ above room temperature realizes that is a meaningless cosmetic change. Regardless of how one feels about abortion or birth control (or even how one feels about religion), this is a bad policy. Decisions about what sort of insurance to provide shouldn’t be the result of a one-size-fits-all government mandate. Yes, the Administration’s religious intolerance is unseemly, but it is also symptomatic of why government intervention in the health sector is the underlying problem.
This form of religious bullying - are you taking note, Anderson Cooper? - is central to the institutional left's crusade against Judeo-Christianity in American public and private life. Class warfare is now united with cultural warfare as the all-important media dutifully plays its enabling and destructive role. These are serious consequences for electing a cultural Marxist manufactured in the radical academic trenches where the destruction of the humanities departments and replacement with nihilism foretold our current predicament. If we don't act and stand together now - regardless of faith, or lack therein - our country is on the precipice of its greatest moral failure and expedited destruction.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, President, Susan B. Anthony List
For years, 'Who decides?’ was the favorite incantation from the feminist movement. Just a dodge of the central question in the abortion debate, the question is, however, rightly asked now. President Obama asserts it is government, specifically himself as its spokesman, who decides what a properly formed conscience is.
'Who decides' which is more fundamental: religious freedom or an ideology of reproductive health care? The principle was decided some time ago and recorded as the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Obama does not have the power to now re-decide this constitutional principle through regulation. Using all the electoral and legislative power the blessings of liberty granted American citizens, we will stop this attack. First, we will advance legislation to disarm his assault on conscience and second, implement electoral strategy to defeat him.
Terence P. Jeffrey, Syndicated Columnist
No government has the right to order people to act against their religious beliefs. The Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment expressly denies our government the authority to do so. Yet Obama believes he can order individuals and institutions to buy or provide insurance plans that cover sterilizations, artificial contraceptives and abortifacients even if, in keeping with the teachings of their faith, they conscientiously object to these things. In commanding Americans to buy insurance plans that cover abortifacients, Obama is ordering Americans who object to abortion to provide others with the instrument to kill an unborn child. Many of this nation’s Catholic bishops spoke not just for themselves but for the cause of liberty itself, when they said: “We cannot—we will not—comply with this law.”
Elaine Donnelly, President, Center for Military Readiness
Within hours of the president's announcement, the Army's Chief of Chaplains tried to interfere with the reading of a message of protest from Archbishop Timothy Broglio, who heads the Archdiocese for the Military Services. This was a big mistake, but not an isolated incident in the politically-charged atmosphere of today's military. Several times the administration has made it clear that moral conflicts among military people of faith must be resolved in only one way: the president's way. The subsequent "compromise" is typical of the Obama administration's practice of trying to defuse opposition by dissembling and misleading the public through unquestioning media. This deception and must not be allowed to stand. Constitutional rights of conscience must be defended and maintained.
David Bozell, Executive Director, For America
In March of 2008, then-Senator Obama said "I've got two daughters....But if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby." If that statement makes President Obama sleep better at night, then so be it. That said, President Obama's new "rule," or whatever he wants to call it, coerces me to pay for his daughters’ abortions, should they "make a mistake" and not want to be "punished with a baby," as their father advised.
No, sir, I will not. No one, in a free society, should be coerced into paying for something deeply against his or her conscience. I have deep convictions on this. So do tens of millions of us. We refuse to have the deaths of American babies on our conscience, including your would-be grandchildren, Mr. President. All elected officials, anyone and everyone in a leadership capacity within government, needs to stop what they're doing immediately and make rescinding this "rule" THE TOP priority. Budgets, recess appointments and naming post offices can wait. President Obama's "rule" is an egregious, terrible decision, an overreach of power and an unconstitutional act. It must be overturned.
Richard Viguerie, Chairman, ConservativeHQ.com
If President Obama feels embolden to take this, in your face-unconstitutional -re election threatening action against the largest and perhaps the most powerful organization in America and an organization whose leadership and a majority of members have been supportive of him, I fear to think what's in store for America If he were to have four more years as President with almost no governor on him.
Representative Jack Kingston (R-GA)
Friday's phony compromise is classic Obama double speak designed to fool the non political swing voter, give a wink and nod to the left and stab the soul of religious liberty.
The mandate still accomplishes its purpose- a nanny state power grab, centralized government planning over free market solutions and a further erosion of the Constitution. Whether organizations choose to violate their faith or the law they'll still subsidize contraceptives.
It's another reminder. November is a referendum on America's future. We can chose Washington, Madison and Jefferson OR Soros, Alinsky and Barrack Hussein Obama.
Colin Hanna, President, Let Freedom Ring
President Obama and HHS Secretary Sibelius just gave us a rare peek behind the curtain into what a second Obama term would include: a Constitution-trampling assault on religious liberty. No one should be fooled by their semantic slipperiness. They know that they must secularize America before they can impose their utopian, redistributionist agenda on a people that once was free. Catholics, Protestants, Jews, Muslims, Mormons and more must unite in ensuring that there is no second Obama term.
Patrick J. Reilly, President, The Cardinal Newman Society
The great advocate of conscience, John Henry Newman, once pleaded: "You either accept Christianity, or you do not: if you do, do not garble and patch it; if you do not, suffer others to submit to it ungarbled." The Catholic colleges we work with simply want the right to conform to their beliefs--a fundamental human right enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. But President Obama's "new" mandate still forces religious colleges to pay for abortion-causing drugs, sterilization, and contraception in student health plans. It still imposes coverage on employers, employees, families, and individuals regardless of conscience and parental concerns. It still enforces separate standards for churches and religious organizations. It still retains stiff penalties for noncompliance, threatening the survival of many religious colleges, schools, hospitals, and charities.
Charmaine Yoest, Ph.D, President & CEO, Americans United for Life
Thomas Jefferson wrote that: “No provision in our Constitution ought to be dearer to man than that which protects the rights of conscience against the enterprises of civil authority.” Today we face a clever and insidious enterprise indeed. A President who proclaimed an interest in finding common ground on abortion is now using the brute power of the state to enforce his own agenda of abortion promotion. Using deceptive definitions and creative accounting, the newly announced rule tries to obscure a stubborn fact: this plan establishes a mandated subsidy of life-ending drugs. This policy is the antithesis of health care and sets up a direct confrontation with the conscience rights of the American people.
Penny Nance, Concerned Women for America: http://www.cwfa.org/content.asp?id=20916
Requiring employers affiliated with the Christian faith, like Concerned Women for America, to include free abortion-inducing drugs in their health insurance plans is contrary to both Christian doctrine and constitutional guarantees of religious freedom. When religious groups are forced to deny their deeply held religious convictions, it is not called "balance"; it is called "tyranny." Every American will be forced to undermine their moral and religious principles and subsidize what they believe to be morally repugnant. As much as President Obama would like us to believe this is a "women's right's issue," this is really a religious freedom issue. President Obama has abused his executive power and overstepped the bounds of the Constitution.
We are deeply concerned about the dismantling of our Constitutional freedoms and the assault on Christian institutions in America. Concerned Women for America reminds the president that our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian principles. Further, America's social safety nets will not hold without the contributions of Christian institutions - many of them run by the Catholic Church - and that churches and religious institutions provide the strong moral threads of the nation's social fabric. While the Obama Administration is attempting to solve this problem with an inane compromise, their attempt will ultimately prove futile so long as the mandate is not repealed. In the context of the HHS Mandate, we reaffirm the Manhattan Declaration, which we signed months ago, and we reiterate its concluding statement, "We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar's. But, under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God's."
Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, Chairman, Traditional Values Coalition
Andrea Lafferty, President, Traditional Values Coalition
Our Founding Fathers were profoundly Christian men, yet they did not give us a theocracy -- but a republic. This republic was built upon the idea that human conscience was the citadel of free thought, where government dare not tread. For the Obama administration, 235 years to the day that Patrick Henry demanded liberty or death, to strip away those rights through Obamacare in sweeping and unprecedented fashion via a national mandate is an atrocious, unconstitutional overreach without precedent or historical equal in the American experience.
The Obama administration has no rights, never had any rights, and never will have any rights to demand the loyalty our consciences. There is no "compromise" on the HHS mandate, precisely because government has no right to make such a demand. The rights of religious liberty and human conscience are inviolable. The Obama administration does not have the privilege to impose the HHS mandate. The federal government does not have this privilege. The U.S. Constitution does not afford our government this privilege. Our rights are individually possessed, and our laws and Constitution are designed to restrain our government -- not to imagine new laws and new schematics for presidents to rule and reign by executive decree.
Traditional Values Coalition and the 43,000 churches, ministries and millions of patriots we represent -- among them Protestant, Catholic and Jews, -- proudly stands with the bishops of the Catholic Church to resist what can only be described as a tyrannical overreach by the Obama administration. Liberals have intruded upon every facet of American life.
Bill Pascoe, Executive Vice President, Citizens for the Republic
The Obama 'accommodation' reveals the radical nature of Barack Obama's beliefs about the nature of the government's power. We've moved from his belief that government can require citizens to purchase a service they may not want to his belief that government can require a business to provide a service for free. This isn't about contraception, and it's not even about the right to practice one's religion free of government interference. It's about whether or not there are ANY limits on government power. To let this decision stand is to leave the Constitution in shreds, violating the fundamental principle of limited government with enumerated powers. It must not stand.
Jack Fowler, Publisher, National Review Magazine
Justice White warned America, in his Roe dissent, that we were witnessing an act of “raw judicial power.” From First Trimester abortion, we now find ourselves dealing with First Amendment destruction: President Obama's act of raw executive power is an unconscionable scheme to force people of faith to accept and engage in practices they find immoral and contrary to their beliefs. National Review was founded to stand athwart History, yelling Stop. Now is the time for all good men and women, regardless of their ideologies, faiths, or partisan affiliations, to yell Stop against this statist expansion at the cost of our most basic liberties and the destruction of our religious institutions.
Mark Tapscott, Editorial Page Editor, The Washingon Examiner
Nothing more effectively illustrates why Obamacare must be repealed, root and branch, as soon as possible.
Alfred S. Regnery, President and Publisher, The American Spectator
I am outraged at the Obama Administration's complete disregard for basic religious liberty, demonstrated by its recently-issued rule on mandated health-care coverage for abortion and contraceptive services within religious organizations. Religious liberty, as so clearly stated in the First Amendment, is one of the most treasured rights guaranteed to all Americans. In order to gain political favor among a small group of its "base," at the expense of all other citizens, the Administration again demonstrates that to it, the U.S. Constitution is a meaningless document which only gets in the way of its lust for power over individual liberty. Its attempt at a completely unacceptal compromise only further demonstrates its blatant contempt for the Constitution in order to gain a few votes.
David Limbaugh, Nationally Syndicated Columnist
President Obama's fraudulent feint toward a compromise on the conscience issue is almost as cynical as his initial invocation of the mandate by which he lawlessly trampled on our sacred religious liberties. He looked people of faith directly in the eye and repeatedly promised to protect their conscience rights. By purportedly shifting the costs of this coverage to insurers themselves he hasn't reversed his assault on religious freedom, but has compounded it by trampling on other constitutional guarantees. No one should be fooled by this ploy. There is a reason the framers enshrined our religious liberties in the very first two clauses of the very First Amendment to the Constitution. For the same reason we must dedicate ourselves to vigorously opposing this sham compromise and safeguarding these foundational freedoms.
Dr. David Stevens, CEO, Christian Medical Association
The President's so-called 'religious accommodation' shows that he either has no comprehension of what conscience convictions mean or that he cynically chooses to disregard conscience and play a political game. We learned from his executive order on abortion in health care reform that verbal engineering cannot cover up a contempt for conscience.
Floyd Brown, Writer, Activist, and President of the Western Center for Journalism
The Obama Administration has previously assaulted every one of the US Constitution's Amendments in the Bill of Rights. But this latest assault on the freedom to practice our own personal religious beliefs in the conduct of our personal healthcare and economic decisions is a violation of the intimate relationship between millions of Americans and their Creator and Heavenly Father. I personally have been pushed by this policy to a position where I am required to engage in civil disobedience or violate my conscience and sin. Obama can steal all of my freedoms, but I will not allow him to stand between me and my Savior.
Don Feder, Communications Director, World Congress of Families.
As a Jew, an American and an advocate for the family, I am appalled by President Obama's blatant attack on religious freedom and family values.
As the left is the most coercive force in American society, it's hardly surprising that a president who's a doctrinaire leftist is doing everything in his not inconsiderable power to force the culture of death on those who cling to the Juedo-Christian ethic.
He must be resisted with every fiber of our beings. I am proud to join other concerned citizens in this effort.
Craigan P. Shirley, President, Shirley Bannister Public Affairs
The President’s defenders have claimed for the last five years that he taught constitutional law although the fact is he was only a part-time professor of civil rights. Indeed, his actions beg the question, has he ever read the Bill of Rights? Whether he read it he has taken a sacred oath to defend the Constitution, and now given offense to it. Does this not at the very least constitute a “misdemeanor” against that document and the rule of law? The point bears debate: Is President Obama a “domestic enemy”?
In fact, the American Robespierre has little regard for the rule of law, the civil rights for those who stand in his way, and we may count our blessings he and his fellow Jacobins showed their true nature now and not after next November. We fortunately have time to act and we may thank God for it---while it is still permissible under Obama I.0.
Like their predecessors in the French Revolution, Obama and his merry band of Deconstructionists will not cease or desist until they subjugate or grind into the ground every institution that stands in opposition or for civilized and decent society. The country of America continues as a fact, but Obama is bent on the destruction of the idea of America.
Each one of us has a selfish reason to work for his defeat. If Obama has no compunction against unleashing the forces of corrupt centralized authority against the powerful Catholic Church, what chance do any of us stand against the Internal Revenue Service or the jackbooted thugs of the Obama Police State? Can you spell “Reeducation Camp”? We must hang together ladies and gentlemen, or he will surely hang us all out to dry.
Joseph Farah, Editor and Chief Executive Officer, WND.com and WND Books
This is liberty’s last stand. This isn’t just a Catholic issue. As an evangelical business owner, I object as strenuously as does any Catholic. This is a divide-and-conquer strategy by the Obama administration to make the state the ultimate arbiter of morality. This is the last straw for self-government, personal conscience and individual liberty.
I am not Catholic. I'm an American. The Obama Mandate Against Conscience is deeply disturbing to all Americans, of every faith. And his phony "fix" is even worse: it is cynical and misleading. It is still an imperial edict from the White House, now directed at yet another sector of American society (insurance companies) to do his bidding. We are not subjects. He is not king. The very idea that he believes sweeping the insurance companies into his Mandate Against Conscience should somehow be a "relief" to anyone demonstrates how seriously removed from reality he is. We are not fooled. This cannot stand.
Michael Farris, Chancellor, Patrick Henry College (for identification purposes only)
President Obama's "rules" on coerced coverage for contraception violate two of America's most cherished values--religious freedom and self-government. It violates religious freedom because it coerces the conscience of sincere religious organizations and individuals. It violates self-government because it is rule by fiat. Article I Sec. 1 of the Constitution says that Congress has all legislative power in this nation. President Obama is supposed to implement the law, not make rules from an imperial throne.
Ron Robinson, Young America’s Foundation (for identification purposes only)
It is not sufficient for the Left to force us to use tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood. Now the Obama Administration and its accomplices seek to undermine our core religious rights previously protected by the First Amendment. There can be no compromise with these subverters of the Faith. Hands off our Church and its charitable services.
Deborah Hamilton, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Pastors’ Network
The Pennsylvania Pastors Network joins the voices of those of faith in opposing the Obama administration’s mandate forcing Catholics and Protestants to violate their consciences by providing contraceptive, sterilization and abortifacient services. By trying to force Catholics and people of faith to perform duties that are in direct opposition to the very core beliefs and values of their faith, the Obama administration has demonstrated their disrespect, contempt and condescension for all people of faith. It is one more reason that we should be certain that this president who has no regard for the Christian faith would have no regard for our Constitution, which was penned by men of faith, acting upon those directives that they believed their Creator would have them do. To continue to allow this president to govern our country would be to violate the very essence of our Constitution and the religious liberty and freedom of “We, the people.”
Thomas Peters, Blogger, American Papist
In addition to being disingenuous, the administration's "accommodation" is downright insulting to our intelligence. Re-issuing the same offensive mandate in invisible ink that everyone can still see is not an "accommodation" much less a "compromise." The President promised the American people that under his health care reform people who liked their plan could keep it. There is no way this promise still applies to people of religious conviction and the President should own up to the fact that he has egregiously broken his word to the American people.
Brian Burch, President, CatholicVote.org
Rarely does a social issue in politics unite Democrats and Republicans as this has. The opposition to the Obama Administration's unprecedented HHS mandate has rightly become a proxy fight for the defense of liberty everywhere. Even President Obama's hometown paper, the Chicago Tribune, rightly called his latest so-called accommodation a 'distinction without a difference,' while recognizing that ceding this freedom to the state ought to concern every American. You don't have to be Catholic to understand that once our government has been granted the authority to dictate what you can or cannot believe, freedom itself will have been dealt a devastating blow.
Mario H. Lopez, President, Hispanic Leadership Fund
President Obama is using the full power of the federal government to force religious institutions to violate deeply rooted principles of morality. With this unconscionable and unjust mandate, President Obama acts as an authoritarian who ignores the Constitution in pursuit of a radical agenda.
